Waste paper prices continue to rise sharply

The trend of rising waste paper prices continues in May. After prices for bulk grades had already risen significantly in March and April, further increases of €20 per tonne on average are expected for mixed and department stores' waste paper as well as deinked goods in the current month.

As reasons for the recent price increase, interviewees point to slightly better demand from industry, an unchanged weak volume of waste paper and bottlenecks in logistics and collection due to the public holidays in May.

The capacity utilisation of paper mills and the demand for waste paper are currently higher than last year. This is also indicated by figures from the association "Die Papierindustrie". According to these figures, waste paper consumption at German mills rose by seven percent to 4.1 million tonnes in the first quarter compared to the same period last year.
