UPM announces that production at the Hürth paper mill will cease on August 31, 2024. In addition, the paper machine (PM) 3 at Nordland Papier, which is designed for fine paper, will cease production by the end of this year at the latest, it adds. A total of 338 employees will be affected by the implementation of the plans. UPM will thus reduce its annual production capacity by 330,000 metric tons of newsprint and 280,000 metric tons of uncoated fine paper.

The paper manufacturer announced its plans in May, citing the continued decline in demand for graphic paper as the reason for the decision. This trend had intensified in 2023, exacerbating the existing overcapacity in the market.
