Upfield develops greaseproof paper container for vegan butter
News General news
Dutch food manufacturer Upfield has joined forces with three other partners to produce recyclable, plastic-free, paper-based packaging for butter substitutes and spreads.
According to a statement from the company, the container was developed over four years in collaboration with US technology provider and material manufacturer Footprint, label manufacturer Multi-Color Corporation and French equipment manufacturer Pagès Group.
As Upfield explains, the packaging is produced from pressed, wet paper fibres using wet fibre moulding from Footprint. The paper solution is said to be greaseproof and waterproof, plastic-free and can be disposed of via the household paper and cardboard collection system.
In total, Upfield aims to replace two billion items of plastic packaging with this technology by 2030.
