Toscotec to supply complete Yankee Hoods upgrade to Renova in Portugal

Portuguese tissue producer c’s Yankee hoods and air system at their Torres Novas facility near Lisbon. The rebuild is planned for 2024. This is a repeat order for Toscotec who started its cooperation with Renova in 2007 with the replacement of their PM5’s cast iron Yankee with a TT SYD Steel Yankee Dryer.

Tailor-made solution for substantial consumption reduction
Toscotec developed a customized solution designed to deliver gas consumption reductions exceeding 25%, which will significantly bring down carbon emissions and increase machine run-ability.
The scope includes a high-efficiency, gas fired TT Hood-Duo system delivering a uniform Cross Direction (CD) moisture profile. Toscotec will supply TT Swing and TT Drying Equilibrium for optimal energy efficiency in the drying section. TT Swing regulates the air system operation mode by switching from Duo system to Hybrid mode (with heated air only in the wet section) based on the production needs. TT Drying Equilibrium is a smart and reliable system that ensures an automatic regulation of the air balance in the hoods and air system to guarantee the highest productivity and energy efficiency.
An additional optimization of the drying capacity of PM6 is delivered by Toscotec’s Burner Management System (BMS), which reduces the gas consumption by automatically controlling the air-to-gas ratio in the burners.

Technology for decarbonization
With a view to future implementations, the new air system features low-emission burners designed for both natural gas and hydrogen in percentages of up to 100%. In order to ensure the highest production flexibility, the system is also designed for the future installation of electric heat exchangers to heat up the process air with either 100% natural gas or 100% electricity or a combination of the two.

According to Renova, “Toscotec offered an advanced technological solution for energy savings and carbon reduction for PM6. With this important upgrade, Renova aims to take a step further in its continuous efforts to upgrade its technology to ensure minimal environmental impacts and a careful and rational use of energy and resources.”
