SÜDPACK wins the Green Packaging Star Award® 2021

SÜDPACK continues on the road to success: With a highly innovative packaging concept, the film manufacturer impressed the jury of the renowned Austrian industry award Green Packaging Star Award. The solution is a perfect symbiosis of recyclability and material reduction - and is therefore particularly resource-friendly. Nevertheless, it offers consistently high performance with familiar functionalities as well as an attractive, product- and brand-appropriate design.

The list of awards that SÜDPACK receives for its sustainable packaging concepts continues to grow. As early as 2020, the Pure Line product family was awarded the German Packaging Prize in the sustainability category. In the same year, SÜDPACK received the "Sustainability Award" in the "Pre-Commercialized Innovation" category for a mozzarella package from ZOTT that uses plastics from chemical recycling. This was followed in 2021 by the German Packaging Award in the Economic Efficiency category and also the Gold Packaging Award for the innovative SPQ printing technology, which contributes to significantly reduced ink and solvent consumption in packaging printing.

The Green Packaging Star Award has now been presented to a product that also helps to conserve resources and thus meets the growing demand for sustainable packaging concepts. The packaging for Berger's ham cold cuts, which are offered in eleven different flavors, consists of a PP-based bottom film (SÜDPACK Ecoterm) and a polypropylene-based top film (SÜDPACK Multipeel PurePP). The recyclability of the materials has been rated at least 95 percent by the independent Cyclos Institute.

The thermoformable Ecoterm bottom film is especially characterized by its temperature resistance and is an ideal choice for cooked ham in particular, which must be stored refrigerated. In terms of sealing layers and barrier functions, it has been optimally designed to meet the requirements at Berger. As a further contribution to greater sustainability, SÜDPACK achieves an extended shelf life for sensitive products with the innovative packaging concept, thus also preventing food waste due to premature spoilage.

Last but not least, the new types of film are significantly lighter - with the same optimum stability and performance as well as the usual high level of convenience for the consumer. Overall, the ham specialist can save around 24 tons of plastic per year by switching to the new packaging concept. Another advantage is that the low weight has a positive effect on the CO2 balance along the entire logistics chain. And: the materials can be processed on conventional packaging lines without any problems.

"We are currently experiencing very strong demand for our products from our roadmap for sustainable film solutions, which includes solutions in the area of resource conservation, recycling, and for closing loops. So every new project that we are able to successfully implement for a customer contributes to making the packaging world more sustainable," sums up Valeska Haux, VP Strategic Marketing at SÜDPACK.

The Green Packaging Star Award was presented to representatives of SÜDPACK and Berger Schinken at the "Austrian Packaging Day 2021" at the MAK, the Museum of Applied Arts in Vienna, on October 28.
