Sappi plant in Stockstadt threatened with closure
News General news
After Sappi, Johannesburg, reviewed all options for the Stockstadt plant, including discussions with other potential buyers, it has become clear that a sale of the plant as a going concern is not possible.
According to Sappi, consultations on the future of the mill began on 6 July with the mill management, the economic committee and the works council, which will include the possible closure of the mill and the sale of the site. This would mean that the pulp mill and the paper machine would be closed. Customers would continue to be served from other Sappi plants, it said.
Sappi's Stockstadt mill is an integrated pulp and paper mill that produces 145,000 t/y of pulp and 220,000 t/y of coated and uncoated woodfree papers sold mainly to the European printing market. The mill employs approximately 550 people.
