Sandwich paper is not parchment paper

In our home, greaseproof paper used to be equated with parchment paper. When we were almost out of sandwich paper, my mother used to say, "I've really got to buy parchment paper next time." But in reality, sandwich paper is not parchment paper at all.

Sandwich paper or parchment substitute is a wood-free, greaseproof paper that is used to wrap food. Unlike real parchment, it is neither waterproof nor boil-proof.

Greaseproofness is achieved by grinding the fibres to a greasy consistency. The fibres are crushed in the process, and the absorbency of the paper decreases considerably. For packaging purposes, parchment paper is also laminated. The basis weight is 40 to 80 g/m2. If the basis weight is less than 40 g/m2, however, it is referred to as glassine.

Buttered paper can also be used for handicrafts, e.g. as a substitute for transparent paper.

In Germany, Christian Morgenstern's poem "Das Butterbrotpapier" (The sandwich paper) became quite famous.
