Poland: Situation of cartonboard producers in summer less dramatic than in other countries

On the pan-European cartonboard market, the historically unusually high decline in volumes continued in the third quarter. The background to this was consumer reluctance to buy due to inflation and destocking in folding carton factories.

The manufacturers surveyed partly carried out market-related shutdowns of cartonboard machines or production cutbacks for several weeks in order to somehow manage the oversupply. Nevertheless, the price curve for both GC and GD cartonboard on the Polish market continued to go down slightly in the third quarter.

According to suppliers of primary and secondary fiber based cartonboard, the situation in Poland was less bad than in other countries. Order intake in the summer months was reported to be quite decent, and for August in particular, sellers spoke of a strong order book in connection with the Christmas business. Orders then came in more hesitantly in September, different producers reported, which is unusual for the beginning of fall and could indicate a deterioration.
