Rural district Harburg: Environmentally friendly paper bags for green waste collection
News News blog
The district of Harburg offers a regular street collection service for green waste.
Branches and shrub cuttings are taken along, which are bundled with special recycling cords provided by the district. Leaves, grass cuttings and other plant waste can be collected in the district's special green waste bags, which hold up to 35 kg. There is a charge of 0.50 euro per sack, which covers part of the disposal costs.
The paper sacks are made from waste paper and can be composted together with the green waste. This eliminates the time-consuming pouring out or cutting open during collection. To extend the shelf life of the bags, the district gives practical tips:
- Fill the bag with leaves that are as dry as possible at the earliest one week before collection.
- Allow damp bags to dry in a sheltered location.
- When moving the bags, place them carefully on the ground.
- Insert loose branches vertically between the leaves, not crosswise.
- Protect filled bags from rain and do not pack them too tightly.
The green waste should also not be additionally packed in plastic bags, as these would contaminate the compost.
