Paboco presents the world's first market-ready paper bottle with paper closure

The result of a development collaboration between Paboco and Blue Ocean Closures is the first market-ready paper bottle and fiber-based closure combination, available today and expected to reach consumers in early 2025.

Developed by Paboco and Blue Ocean Closures, the bottle and closure combination is recyclable like paper packaging due to the thin barrier.

Paboco has years of experience in the development of paper bottle packaging and is using this to bring the first ever combination of paper bottles and fiber-based closures to the market.

In line with its mission of “repacking the planet”, Paboco consistently strives for solutions that improve on what has gone before. This is how we create lasting, impactful change that turns innovation into reality. Such as through the partnership with Blue Ocean Closures, which has launched a standard closure for solids and pills.

The total weight of the entire packaging, including the cap, is less than 16 grams and that of the HDPE barrier is less than 2 grams. This is in line with Paboco's approach of using as little material as possible in production. Thanks to the thin barrier, the bottle and cap can be recycled like paper packaging. A big step in the right direction for the company and consumer brands.

“For us at Paboco, this means an immediate change in the industry: we are changing the material options in the packaging industry and continuing to focus on lightweight packaging. We have already started production and expect these bottles to be in the hands of consumers by early 2025. I am pleased that we can offer this solution not as a concept, but as real packaging,” says Michael Michelsen, Commercial Director of Paboco.

Ola Tönnberg, CCO of BlueOcean Closures, explains: “We see the fiber-based closure as a new standard that can be applied to bottles of different materials. We look forward to working with Paboco because by applying it to fiber bottles, we open up another opportunity to reduce plastic.”

This milestone is a continuation of Paboco's journey to introduce paper bottles at scale by the end of 2025 and to develop future bio-based solutions.

Paboco will apply the technical and design insights from the combination of paper bottles and closures within the “Pioneer Community”. This group of companies was the first to support paper bottles and will continue the development to solve the packaging needs of a variety of products.
One such company working with both Paboco and Blue Ocean Closures is the Absolut Group. “We are proud to be part of the pioneering communities of Paboco and Blue Ocean Closures. This launch represents an important milestone in sustainable packaging and we look forward to learning from it as we continue our cross-industry efforts to drive sustainable innovation and expand our packaging materials portfolio,” says Elin Furelid, Director Future of Packaging at Absolut Group.

The paper bottle and cap can be ordered by selected partners and were exhibited at this year's CPHI in Milan and will be exhibited at Scanpack in Gothenburg (October 22-25).
