What are Suction Rolls?
Suction rolls are rotating rolls with a perforated surface produced using the deep hole drilling process. Inside the roll, there is a vacuum that is transmitted to the surface through the suction holes. This creates a suction effect that can be used to dewater moist materials such as paper or cardboard and to remove them from one surface (e.g., wire/felt) and transfer them to another surface (e.g., felts). In the latter property, suction rolls can also be used in dry environments or non-paper-based applications (e.g., foil, technical nonwovens).

Function of Suction Rolls in Paper Manufacturing
In paper production, suction rolls are mainly used in the wire/press section. Here, the still-moist fiber web, which later becomes the paper, is transferred from the wire to the press felt using the suction roll - a process called couching.
The press felt then transports the fiber web through the so-called press nips. These are pairs of rolls that squeeze the web under high pressure and thus mechanically dewater it. Depending on the configuration of the press section, the paper web can reach a dry content of up to 55% here. In the press nips themselves, even higher values can be achieved, but the web is subject to certain rewetting effects, such as the capillary action in press and transport felts.
The press section with its suction rolls is usually the last station of the paper machine where mechanical dewatering takes place. In the subsequent drying section, the remaining moisture is removed from the paper web thermally through the heated surface of the drying cylinders.
