Mayr-Melnhof Packaging will close the Schilling plant already at the end of April
News General news
Mayr-Melnhof Packaging has scheduled the closure of packaging production at the Schilling site near Heilbronn for the end of April. This was confirmed by a spokesperson for the MM Group in response to an enquiry from EUWID.
In mid-January, the Austrian group had informed about the corresponding plans. MM justifies the step with the changed consumer behaviour in the detergent market towards liquid solutions. In Schilling, MM Packaging produces, among other things, packaging for powder detergents. According to MM, the core competence of the Heilbronn site concerned is the production of microwave packaging, offset printing and barrier coatings for paper and cardboard.
Due to the changing demand trend, the plant had already been recording a continuous decline in sales since 2017, it said in January. In addition, increased energy and raw material costs as well as underutilised production capacities had further worsened the financial situation of the plant. When asked, the company would not comment on the capacity of the site. About 165 employees are affected by the closure, according to earlier information. The former packaging plant Schilling GmbH & Co. KG has belonged to the MM Group since 2001.
