Italy: Price increases for recovered paper continue in May

Waste paper prices on the Italian market continued to rise in May. This was due to higher production activity at paper mills and improved demand for waste paper coupled with low collection volumes.

Prices had already risen significantly in the previous month, meaning that customers are now faced with much higher raw material costs. In general, incoming orders among packaging paper and board manufacturers have recently been described as slightly better, but there is no euphoria.

The players do not feel that general consumption has picked up significantly. It is therefore all the more surprising for some that waste paper prices have risen so much in such a short space of time.

Market participants explained this with various factors that came together. All in all, demand for the lower grades of recovered paper has recently been better than in the first few months of the year. Buyers from countries such as Germany and Austria in particular made large purchases in Italy.
