Heinzel ends production of SC paper at Laakirchen paper mill

Laakirchen Papier AG will cease production of SC paper at the end of November 2024. This will reduce the supply of uncoated magazine and catalog papers in Europe by more than 300,000 tons per year.

As planned, the Heinzel Group subsidiary will convert PM 11 at the Austrian paper mill from the production of graphic papers to recovered paper-based corrugated base paper, despite several postponements.

The conversion work will start at the beginning of December 2024. Production capacity at the paper mill in Laakirchen, which has two paper machines, will increase from around 800,000 tons per year to up to 1,040,000 tons per year.

With an investment of well over €100 million, Heinzel is enabling additional production of corrugating medium and testliner. In addition, the Laakirchen site and jobs will be future-proofed, with around 400 employees currently working there.

Heinzel has commissioned the machine and plant manufacturer Voith with the conversion of PM 11.
