Coreboard manufacturers and converters were busier in December than planned for this period. For all companies surveyed by EUWID, this surge in demand came unexpectedly and ran counter to plans to switch off machines to a greater extent between the years.
Plant operation was difficult before Christmas, as companies had slipped into a high sickness rate due to coronavirus and influenza. In some cases, employees were called back from holiday.
No one could really explain the reasons for the upturn. Some saw it as a safeguard for customers who want to be supplied with materials at the start of 2024. Others believed that the increased demand from the market for corrugated base paper and cores for the graphic arts industry was due to the expected increase in electricity prices. The statements were only consistent in that no revival or upturn was assumed.
