German paper market still characterised by oversupply and price pressure
News General news
The German paper market is said to have made a relatively good start to the new year 2024, according to a consensus of players interviewed by EUWID.
Despite the unexpectedly brisk business at the start of the year, according to several industry experts, the pressure on paper mills is palpable and almost tangible. After all, the markets remain in decline, which sometimes puts manufacturers in a predicament.
For the period from January to November 2023, the association DIE PAPIERINDUSTRIE reports a 32.1% decline in graphic paper production to 3.817 million tonnes. Sales in Germany fell by 28.1% to 2.051 million tonnes. Production of paper, board and cardboard for packaging purposes fell by 9.2% to 10.817 million tonnes, while sales in Germany fell by 10.8% to 4.775 million tonnes.
Against the backdrop of continued oversupply, the paper mills were unable to push through the envisaged price increase or stabilisation in the price round for the supply of fine papers, magazine and catalogue papers and kraftliner from January 2024.
In addition to the market for publication papers, the next issue of EUWID Papier & Zellstoff will also look at developments in the market for graphic papers and kraftliner.
