A fire broke out at Smurfit Kappa Zülpich Papier's waste paper yard on Friday afternoon (21 July).

According to the company, about 8,000 tonnes of waste paper were burnt. The extinguishing work is continuing and could last until Wednesday, according to the fire brigade. Production was restarted to a limited extent on Saturday, and the amount of damage cannot yet be quantified. No one was injured.
In Zülpich, Smurfit Kappa produces more than 400,000 tonnes per year of corrugated base paper on two paper machines.
