Up to and including May, demand for wood-free coated papers was down around 40% in 2023 compared to the first five months of 2022, and in the wood-free uncoated papers market segment the decline amounts to around 22%. If the sales volumes of wood-free printing and writing papers continue to develop in a similar way this year, the total demand in 2023 would be around 6.6 million tonnes, of which almost two-thirds would be accounted for by the uncoated paper segment. In addition, there is an export surplus of about 500,000 tonnes per year with non-European countries as a market for European manufacturers, especially for coated wood-free papers.
