EFSA now concludes that titanium dioxide can no longer be considered safe as a food additive and as an additive in animal feed. In this context, questions have also arisen regarding the use of titanium dioxide in food contact materials and articles, which are already the subject of communication between folding carton manufacturers and their customers.

The FFI Quality Management Working Group has prepared a new FFI Fact Sheet on titanium dioxide in folding food cartons. In particular, the clarifications of the European Printing Ink Industry Association EuPIA, which takes a position on titanium dioxide in food contact articles, have also been incorporated into the fact sheet. EuPIA states that the use of titanium dioxide in printed food contact materials and articles is not covered by the food contact materials and articles are not affected by the EFSA opinion.

A corresponding risk assessment for consumers is derived from this clarification, which is explained in the FFI Fact Sheet. The FFI Fact Sheet Titanium Dioxide can be requested from the FFI office.
