Recyclable toy packaging is shipping box and product packaging at the same time: DS Smith develops innovative e-commerce packaging concept for PLAYMOBIL

DS Smith, the leading provider of sustainable, fibre-based packaging, has developed a 2-in-1 packaging solution together with the geobra Brandstätter Group, the manufacturer of PLAYMOBIL. Optimised for online retail, the solution conserves natural resources by serving as both a robust shipping box and high-quality product packaging.

For the PLAYMOBIL airport set from the City Action themed world, which is currently available exclusively on Amazon, DS Smith developed an innovative and sustainable e-commerce packaging concept for the system toy manufacturer. The packaging solution depicts the contained play world printed in one colour on the outside and is also the shipping package, which makes additional outer packaging for shipping unnecessary. The inside is, as usual for the toy brand, elaborately designed and refined with multicoloured printing. If you want to give the toy set as a gift, you can simply turn the box over in a few simple steps and use the traditional, colourful PLAYMOBIL packaging. Despite external influences during transport and applied shipping labels, the customer receives a flawless product packaging for giving away, collecting or storing.

Recyclable reversible packaging optimises raw material consumption and the supply chain
"We work closely with our customers to develop new and better ways to optimise the sustainability of their packaging. The issue of sustainability plays a major role in e-commerce, where consumers are also increasingly looking for responsible and resource-efficient packaging. In the case of packaging, the complete recyclability of the material is one of the features that is paid attention to," says Michael Kullmann, Account Manager at DS Smith. "The omnichannel-ready packaging we designed for Playmobil has the further advantage that it is supply chain-optimised and no unnecessary empty space is transported. One of our biggest goals in e-commerce is to optimise materials and designs to best meet transport requirements while reducing waste and shipping volumes. The customised packaging solution is 100% recyclable and can thus be reprocessed into new recyclable corrugated packaging after being returned to the material cycle."

"With DS Smith, we have a good partner at our side with whom we were able to implement this new type of shipping packaging for our company. The reversible packaging is ideal for online trade. With this solution, we are meeting our customers' interest in sustainability and resource efficiency in two ways - both in terms of material consumption and optimisation of the supply chain," say the project managers at geobra Brandstätter.
