Solidarity must apply to all sides - state must take over gas levy
News General news
According to the German paper industry, the state must cancel the gas levy planned for the autumn and assume the costs in full.
For years, gas had been promoted as a bridging technology. Private consumers and energy-intensive industry have followed suit and are already bearing enormous burdens due to the exorbitant increase in gas prices. They have multiplied to more than 150 €/MWh due to the noticeable reduction in Russian gas supplies since the beginning of last year.
It was right and understandable that the state had saved the gas importer Uniper from bankruptcy. However, the costs for this should not be passed on to consumers and industry. "Whoever demands solidarity must also provide it himself," declared the association DIE PAPIERINDUSTRIE.
The paper industry sees its production threatened by both rising costs and a looming gas shortage. In the worst case, important value chains can no longer be supplied with paper. For example, in food and pharmaceutical packaging, in hospital and care hygiene or in print media.
